Your old PC isn't dead. Microsoft just gave up on it.

Windows 10 support ended in October 2025. Millions of perfectly good laptops and desktops were written off overnight. We quietly install Linux on them instead — and they go on for another decade. Faster, private, secure, and free from the upgrade treadmill.

A working computer shouldn't be disposable.

If your laptop can't run Windows 11, Microsoft's answer is simple: buy a new one. Throw the old one away. But the hardware is fine. The screen still works. The keyboard still works. It's the software that's been locked out.

Linux doesn't care. It'll happily run on a machine from 2010 — and run it well. Most of the people we help are surprised how responsive their "old" computer feels when the bloat is gone.

What we do, plainly put.

Not a subscription. Not a gimmick. A careful installation, set up the way you actually use your computer, with a real person on the other end of the phone when you need help.

01 / Assess

Honest hardware check

We tell you plainly whether your machine is worth reviving. No pressure, no upsell — if it's not the right fit, we'll say so.

02 / Install

A Linux that suits you

We pick a distribution based on how you actually use a computer. Email and web? Photos? Light office work? The choice matters, and we make it for you.

03 / Migrate

Your files come with you

Photos, documents, bookmarks, email — all safely transferred. You won't lose a thing, and we'll show you where everything lives.

04 / Support

30 days of real help

When something confuses you — and it will at first — you ring us. No ticketing system, no chatbot loop. A real conversation with a human who knows the answer.

05 / Secure

Ongoing security monitoring

After installation, we keep watching. Monthly scans check your system for known vulnerabilities, open ports, and outdated services. You get a plain-English report — and a phone call if something needs attention.

All monitoring plans require a Linux installation by Seconwind or a compatibility check. Cancel any time.

The whole thing, step by step.

Most jobs are done within a week of the first phone call. Here's what happens.

i.

We have a chat

Phone or email. You tell us what you use the computer for, and what worries you.

ii.

Quick assessment

We confirm the machine's a good fit and give you a fixed quote — no surprises later.

iii.

Backup & install

Your files are safely copied. Linux is installed. Everything is tested before we hand it back.

iv.

Handover & settle in

We walk you through it in person or remotely. Then 30 days of "ring me any time" support begins.

Questions people always ask.

If yours isn't here, drop us a line — we'd rather answer it properly than have you guess.

Will my internet banking still work?
Yes. Online banking runs in your web browser, and all the major browsers — Firefox, Chrome, Edge — run perfectly well on Linux. Your bank won't know the difference.
What about Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint?
Two options. Microsoft offers free web versions of all three that work on Linux — we'll set them up for you. Alternatively, LibreOffice is a full-featured desktop suite that opens, edits and saves Word/Excel/PowerPoint files. Most people don't notice the difference after a few days.
Can I still use my printer / scanner / webcam?
Almost always, yes. We check compatibility before starting, and the overwhelming majority of consumer hardware works without any configuration on our part. If something's a problem, we'll tell you upfront — no nasty surprises.
What happens to my photos, documents and emails?
We back everything up first, onto external storage. After the install, we restore it all and show you exactly where it lives. Nothing is lost. If you'd like an extra copy kept somewhere safe, we can arrange that too.
Isn't Linux complicated? I'm not technical.
Modern Linux for home users looks and feels much like Windows or a Mac. You click things. You open a browser. You type in a document. You'll have a few "where's that gone?" moments in the first week — that's exactly what the support period is for.
What does the security monitoring actually check?
We scan your system for open ports, running services, and known security vulnerabilities (CVEs). This tells us things like — is your router exposing services it shouldn't? Is your SSH version out of date with known flaws? Is anything listening on the internet that you didn't know about? You get a plain-English report, not a wall of technical jargon.
What about specific software — Sage, Adobe, games, etc.?
This one's a proper conversation, not a blanket answer. Some things work brilliantly on Linux. Some don't. Some have excellent alternatives. Tell us what you rely on and we'll tell you honestly before you commit.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the machine to you?
Both options are available depending on where you are. For a laptop, dropping it off is usually simplest. For a desktop PC, we'll often come to you. Distance and travel are factored into the initial quote. We're Lancashire-based and cover the surrounding area, with remote support available UK-wide.
About the workshop

Thirty years of actually using this stuff.

I've been running Linux since the mid-1990s, long before it was the polite choice. Back then you had to fight it to make it work. Now you barely have to ask. It's been quietly powering the internet, phones, cars and banks for decades, and it deserves a turn on ordinary people's desks.

I started Seconwind because too many perfectly good computers end up in landfill for no good reason. Every machine I bring back is one that didn't need to be replaced. That matters — to you, to your wallet, and quietly, to the planet. The security monitoring side grew out of the same thinking: you shouldn't need to be a professional to know whether your system is safe.
